Holiday safety

Please take a moment to review some of our safety tips to ensure happy holidays for you and your family.

At Home

  • Lock your doors and windows if you are going out, no matter how short a period of time you will be gone.
  • Keep gifts away from windows and other areas where they may be easily seen by passersby or prowlers.
  • Leaving a car unattended while it warms up makes you a target. While convenient, it makes it easy for thieves to steal vehicles and the valuables inside them.

Traveling

  • Take precautions to prevent your home from looking vacant. You may easily halt mail delivery online at www.usps.com. Call any newspaper to which you subscribe and stop delivery while you’re away, too.
  • Call the OHA Police Department at (510) 535-3100, or (510) 535-3101 and request a vacation patrol check. This will alert officers that there should be no activity at your home while you are away.
  • If traveling by car, know your route and check road conditions before you leave.

Out and About

  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or other valuables.
  • If shopping with children, teach them who to go to if they get lost or become separated from you (for example, store clerks, security guards and police officers).

Decorating

  • When stringing lights, make sure that cords are in good condition.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets. Stick to three sets of lights per extension cord.
  • Keep candles in study, non-combustible containers and away from flammable objects.

It is our hope that you and your family have a safe and happy Holiday Season!
