Through Learning for Life (Boys and Girl Scouts of America), the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department has established a Police Explorers and Cadet program for high school, college, and university students. These programs aim to enhance the relationship between the youth in our communities and law enforcement members and provide firsthand knowledge of police operations. Explorers/Cadets may be assigned to community service functions. They can be used as a resource in emergencies and large-scale special events. Members of the Explorer and Cadet program are not sworn.
On July 6, 2011, starting with nine (9) cadets between the ages of 18 and 20.5, the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department embarked on a Police Cadet program. Cadets are residents of the Oakland Housing Authority and work (20 to 25) hours weekly doing various clerical and support staff duties. Cadets must be enrolled in at least 12 units at a college or a university. Our Cadets have attended colleges and universities both locally and around the nation.
The Explorer program is for youth between the ages of 14-18, maintaining at least a "C" average in school. Explorers assist in many areas of the Police department and receive weekly training to further their interest and knowledge in law enforcement and to guide participants in a positive direction. Explorers are also residents of the Oakland Housing Authority.
During the year, Cadets and Explorers attend several events hosted by the Oakland Housing Authority. They participate in the National Night Out, community Block Parties, the Annual Senior Holiday Splendor, Board of Commissioners Meetings, Explorer Competitions, and OHA Employee food drives. Additionally, they present at local area schools on anti-bullying and other youth-related topics.
Advisors schedule weekly training to further Cadet and Explorer knowledge of Public Safety and to guide them as they continue to live their lives positively. Participants are peer role models and models for younger generations. The Cadet/Explorer program assists in job searches, life skills, and opportunities for higher education. The program's goal is to have successful members of the community who give back in service.
